Diabetes care can be a full time job. Let us help.

Diabetes Health Care

Diabetes is complicated. Your primary doctor alone may not be able to manage every area in which you need diabetes care. That's why working closely with a complete diabetes health care team is vital, to help you completely manage your diabetes with as much ease and as few complications as possible. Your diabetes health care team should be created by you and your doctor and may include an eye doctor, specialized nurses, and a dietitian. Your doctor may even include other specialists, such as a foot doctor, and more.

Diabetes Health Care Goal

The main goal of diabetes treatment from your diabetes health care team is to bring your glucose levels down as close to normal as is safely possible, a recommended 90-130 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) before meals. Your doctor may set different targets for you, depending on other factors, such as how often you have low blood glucose reactions. Most aspects of your diabetes treatment plan - measuring your glucose levels, taking diabetes pills or insulin shots, exercising, losing weight, planning meals - will help you reach your target glucose level.

The reason glucose level management so important is simple: high glucose levels can affect many parts of the body. High glucose levels can lead to eye, nerve, and kidney diseases as well as increase your susceptibility to infections. They can blur your vision or make you feel tired or thirsty all the time. People with diabetes also are more likely to develop other health problems, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and fat levels, and heart disease. For these reasons and more, keeping your glucose levels under control is vital to your health. Your diabetes health care team can guide you towards this goal; but getting there depends on you. Spend a lot of time with your diabetes health care team and make your personal diabetes care a vital part of your life.
