Diabetes Types – Type 1 diabetes - Type 2 diabetes

What about type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. It can also be called juvenile diabetes. Patients with type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5-10% of diabetes mellitus diagnoses. Type 1 patients are treated with insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in adults, although more cases are being seen in overweight children. The majority of patients with diabetes are type 2. Type 2 diabetes patients may produce insulin, but the cells can not respond correctly to it. As a result, the sugar stays in the blood instead of being converted to energy. This is also known as “insulin resistance”. Type 2 patients may respond to changes in diet and lifestyle alone, or may take oral and/or injectable medications, including insulin.
