Diabetes Mellitus - What is Diabetes?

What is diabetes mellitus ?

Each time we eat, our bodies break down the food into different substances, one of which is glucose (or sugar), which we need for energy. When glucose is released into the bloodstream, our pancreas senses how much there is and sends out just the right amount of a hormone called insulin. Insulin regulates the amount of glucose that passes from our bloodstream into our cells where it provides energy. With an improper amount of insulin or an incorrect response to insulin, our bodies cannot use the glucose correctly and blood glucose levels go too high. That’s when diabetes occurs.

Diabetes can be treated with insulin, oral medications, or other injectable medications. Some patients will respond to meal planning and increased physical activity. People with diabetes should check their blood glucose levels often and monitor their health carefully.
