Diabetes Food Schedules
For people with diabetes, when they eat is nearly as important as what they eat. Insulin has peaks-times when it works the hardest. Diabetic meals and snacks should be planned around those peaks. Your child will get the most energy from her food when insulin levels are at their highest. It's the best way to ensure that the carbohydrates are used efficiently. Once insulin is injected, it works no matter how much (or how little) glucose is in the blood. If there is too little glucose in her blood when the insulin reaches its peak, your child could experience hypoglycemia (low blood glucose).
Your child's meal plan will include a schedule of meals and snacks that coincides with her insulin injections. It's important for her to stick to the meal times as much as possible to avoid hypoglycemia and to get the nutrition she needs. If she consistently has trouble eating on schedule, it may be time to make a change in the treatment plan. Consult the doctor or dietitian about how to better fit your child's insulin and eating plans into her daily lifestyle.
Foods for Sick Days
When your child is not feeling too well, she may not feel like eating a lot of the foods she normally loves. If her belly is doing somersaults, she's probably not craving a big, spicy plate of barbeque. But it's important for her to eat in order to keep her body from burning fats for fuel (and making ketones) and to keep her body energized so it can get better fast. Here are a few flu-friendly food ideas for when your child is under the weather.
Handy Diabetic Snacks (these foods contain between 10 and 15 grams of carbohydrates):
- 1 double-stick popsicle
- 1 cup Gatorade
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup soup
- 1/2 cup fruit juice
- 1/2 cup regular
- soft drink (not diet)
- saltines
- 5 vanilla wafers
- 4 Lifesavers
- 3 graham crackers
- 1 slice dry toast (not light bread)
- 1/2 cup cooked cereal
- 1/3 cup frozen yogurt
- 1/2 cup regular ice cream
- 1/2 cup sugar-free pudding
- 1/2 cup regular (not sugar-free) Jell-O
- 1/2 cup custard
- 1/2 cup mashed potatoes
- 1/4 cup sherbet
- 1/4 cup regular pudding
