Some Good News for Patients with Diabetes

Diabetes is not contagious. You cannot pass it on to friends or relatives.

You may be able to have the foods you enjoy. Just learn and understand how various foods will affect you.

You can also have starchy foods like bread, cereals, potatoes and pasta. Learn from your educators how to choose foods higher in fiber, and the number of servings that are right for you.

You don’t need “diet” or “diabetic” foods. You just need to eat healthy, something everyone should do. Reduce your intake of fats, salt and sugar, and replace them with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, plus a moderate amount of protein.

You’re no more likely to catch colds and other diseases than anyone else is.

You can lead a normal life. Maintain or reduce your weight (as recommended), eat healthy, exercise, stick with your DA program, and make sure you keep track of your blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. After that, it’s a piece of cake (figuratively, of course).
