Living with Diabetes
Tips for Healthy Holidays
Set Realistic Goals – Don’t try to diet during the holidays, just try to maintain present weight
Enjoy the Festivities – Refocus the attention from the food to the social aspects of the holidays. Make the most of your time with family and friends
Avoid the Bar – Minimize consumption of holiday “cheer.” Substitute sparkling water, coffee or tea, or diet soda.
One Trip Rule – At buffet parties, fill your plate with healthy choices and stand or sit as far away from the buffet as you can while you eat. Avoid the return trip
Don’t Go to a Party Hungry – Hunger will cause you to feel ravenous and make poor food choices
Go for Quality not Quantity – Enjoy moderate portions of items that are your true favorites and skip the rest
Keep Moving and Stay Active – Try to make time to exercise; a few minutes of exercise is better than none
Recipe Modification – Use simple substitutions to help you stay healthy and still enjoy your favorite foods
Reduce the Calories – Cut dessert recipes in half. Always keep low-calorie snacks on hand
Reduce Temptation – Wait 20 minutes before getting seconds. Put the cookie platter out of sight – preferably in another room
Don’t Forget about Portion Control – Try mini foods at holiday parties; Make small sample plates
And last but not least… Enjoy yourself!!
