Delaying the Onset of Diabetes

Even people at increased risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through increased physical activity and a reduced fat and lower calorie diet. Modest weight loss has been proven effective in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes in all groups at high risk for the disease.

Type 2 Diabetes Checklist

It is important to find out early if you have diabetes because treatment can prevent damage to the body from diabetes. Check your risk for type 2 diabetes by checking each item that applies to you.
  • My parent, brother, or sister has diabetes.
  • My family background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino
  • I have had gestational diabetes, or I gave birth to at least one baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • My blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, or I have been told that I have high blood pressure
  • My cholesterol levels are not normal. My HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) is 35 or lower, or my triglyceride level is 250 or higher
  • I exercise fewer than three times a week.

Studying the Facts About Type 2 Diabetes

Although people with diabetes can prevent or delay complications by keeping blood glucose levels close to normal, preventing or delaying the development of type 2 diabetes in the first place is even better.
